12.0 Appendix

This section includes details that deal with the way DocView runs.

Data Path for DocView's Documents

DocView stores its documents in unique subdirectories under a path that ends with the word "DOC." An example would be C:\DOC, or C:\DOCVIEW\DOC. DocView stores each document in its own subdirectory. These subdirectories are numbered, beginning with "1." If you choose the path C:\DOC, then the first document will be stored in the C:\DOC\1 subdirectory, the second document stored in C:\DOC\2, and so on.

DocView Files and their formats

The files used by DocView and their functions are the following:

In the DocView directory:

ARIEL2.EXE- Ariel communications program

CABINET.CBT -Database file for keeping track of file cabinets

CEBIMAGE.DLL- DocView image processing module

DOCVIEW.EXE -The main program

DOCVIEW.HLP- DocView help file

DOCVIEW.XLB- DocView's toolbar buttons are stored here

DV_MESS.SIG - The Message Signature file

DVMESS.DB - Database file for the Message Address Book

DVADD.DB - Database file for the Message Address Book

MESSAGE.EXE - Message executable file

MESSAGE.HLP- Message help file

SFORWARD.DAT- Database file for Ariel IP Addresses

SPIN.DLL- DocView dialog box control module

In the DocView/Outbox subdirectory:

*.img - Image file corresponding to the text message

*.msg - Text file for the message

In the DocView/arieldoc subdirectory:

Temporary space for newly-received documents sent by Ariel systems.

In each /DOC subdirectory for each file cabinet:

FOLDER.FDR - Database file for the folder

In the Document Image directories (/DOC/1, /DOC/2, etc):

Image file - If Ariel, has an arbitrary name; if TIFF, has a .tif extension.

REQUEST.TXT- Text cover page for the document

FILENAME.TXT- Contains name of the document

In the Windows directory:

DOCVIEW.INI - DocView initialization file

DOCVIEW.INI File

The DOCVIEW.INI file is stored in the Windows directory. DocView uses it to run, and sometimes modifies parameters in it. It is divided into three major sections: [DOCVIEW], [ARIEL], and [USER INFORMATION]. The [DOCVIEW] section contains parameters related to the general operation of the program. The [ARIEL] section contains parameters specific to the interaction of DocView with Ariel systems. The [USER INFORMATION] section contains information about you, and is sent to DocView's developers with every comment you send.

Following are the three sections with the parameters listed for each section.

[DOCVIEW]

SOUNDS

STATUS

TOOLBAR

TIFF MESSAGE

DISPOSITION

IMPORT_REMINDER

SAVEDISK

SENDMAIL

[ARIEL]

ARIELNOTIFY

NOTIFYTIME

SENDCOUNT

STORE&FORWARD

IP ADDRESS

[USER INFORMATION]

NAME

ORGANIZATION

ADDRESS1

ADDRESS2

EMAIL ADDRESS

TELEPHONE

Sounds

The SOUNDS parameter governs whether Windows will audibly notify you when a print job is completed. If ON, you will be audibly notified; if OFF, you will not be notified. The actual sound played corresponds to the Windows "Exclamation" sound. You can change this sound through Control Panel's Sound setup.

Examples:

SOUNDS=ON

SOUNDS=OFF

STATUS

The STATUS parameter keeps track of whether the status bar is visible. DocView uses it at the start of a new session to determine whether to display the status bar. If the STATUS parameter is yes, the status bar will be displayed. If the STATUS parameter is NO, the status bar will not be displayed.

An example for this parameter is:

STATUS=YES

TOOLBAR

The TOOLBAR parameter keeps track of whether the tool bar is visible. DocView uses it at the start of a new session to determine whether to display the tool bar. If the TOOLBAR parameter is yes, the tool bar will be displayed. If the TOOLBAR parameter is NO, the tool bar will not be displayed.

An example for this parameter is:

TOOLBAR=YES

TIFF MESSAGE

The TIFF MESSAGE parameter determines whether DocView makes a check to see if it is the default .tif (TIFF) handler. If the value is NO, DocView will not make this check. If this parameter is missing from DOCVIEW.INI, DocView will check to see if it is the default TIFF handler, and notify the user if the operating system is not currently configured to have DocView handle TIFF files.

Example: TIFF MESSAGE=NO

SENDMAIL

The SENDMAIL parameter governs the initial state of the dialog box that appears when the user chooses the Send function. If YES, the state will be to send the document via email. If NO, the state will select the Ariel FTP communication method.

Example: SENDMAIL=NO

SAVEDISK

The SAVEDISK parameter governs the initial state of the dialog box that appears when the user chooses the Save function. If YES, the initial state will be to save the file on disk. If NO, the state will be to import the document into Document Management.

Example: SAVEDISK=YES

DISPOSITION

The DISPOSITION parameter governs the initial state of the dialog box that asks the user how to handle the current document when the user decides to go into Document Management. The current document can be closed, saved onto disk, or imported into Document Management.

Examples:

DISPOSITION=CLOSE

DISPOSITION=SAVE

DISPOSITION=IMPORT

IMPORT_REMINDER

The IMPORT_REMINDER parameter governs whether DocView will display a dialog box reminding the user how to import (save) a document into the Document Management system. If YES, DocView will remind the user; if NO, DocView will not remind the user.

Example: IMPORT_REMINDER=YES

ARIELNOTIFY

The ARIELNOTIFY parameter determines whether DocView interacts with remote Ariel systems. If ON, DocView will be capable of receiving Ariel documents. If OFF, DocView will not receive Ariel documents.

Example:

ARIELNOTIFY=ON

NOTIFYTIME

The NOTIFYTIME parameter determines how often DocView will notify you that a new Ariel document is available for viewing. If set to 10, for example, DocView will notify you every ten minutes that the new document may be viewed. DocView will continue to notify you every ten minutes until you actually view the document for the first time. After that, DocView will not notify you until another Ariel document arrives.

Example:

NOTIFYTIME=10

SENDCOUNT

DocView keeps track of the number of files it transmits to remote Ariel sites (in the form of comments) through the SENDCOUNT parameter. It is initially 1, and is incremented each time you send a comment. Once it reaches 4095, the parameter is reset to 1.

Example:

SENDCOUNT=1

STORE&FORWARD

The STORE&FORWARD parameter allows DocView to query a remote Ariel Store and Forward server for documents each time DocView is invoked. Your computer does not have to be powered up when Ariel first tries to send you a document, as long as it is configured as a Store and Forward server, and its address is specified in this parameter. This value is entered during Setup.

Example:

STORE&FORWARD=130.14.50.6

IP ADDRESS

The IP ADDRESS parameter is the Internet Protocol Address of your computer. Normally, you will not need to supply this, since most Windows Sockets implementations supply this to applications. If, upon the first time that DocView is run, it is unable to find the IP Address through Windows Sockets, it will prompt you for it. After you enter it, the address will be stored in this parameter. You may update it, if necessary, in the "Setup Communications" option in the DocView Document menu.

Example:

130.44.60.26

NAME

The NAME parameter is your name. It is sent to DocView's developers with each comment you send. It is an optional parameter.

Example:

NAME=JOHN SMITH

ORGANIZATION

The ORGANIZATION parameter is the name of your company or organization. It is sent to DocView's developers each time you send a comment. This is an optional parameter.

Example:

ORGANIZATION=BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS

ADDRESS1

The ADDRESS1 parameter is the first part of your mailing address. It is sent to DocView's developers each time you send a comment. This is an optional parameter.

Example:

9000 Rockville Pike

ADDRESS2

The ADDRESS2 parameter is the second part of your address. It is sent to DocView's developers each time you send a comment. This is an optional parameter.

Example:

Mail Stop 44

EMAIL ADDRESS

The EMAIL ADDRESS parameter is your Internet email address. It is sent to DocView's developers each time you send a comment. This is an optional parameter.

Example:

EMAIL ADDRESS=johnson@nih.gov

TELEPHONE

The TELEPHONE parameter is your telephone number. It is sent to DocView's developers each time you send a comment. This is an optional parameter.

Example:

TELEPHONE=301-496-1234

FAX

The FAX parameter is your facsimile number. It is sent to DocView's developers each time you send a comment. This is an optional parameter.

Example: FAX=301-480-4598
