DocView Installation Instructions

After you register online to use DocView, you may download the software.

These are the instructions for downloading and installing DocView on your computer. You may want to print this page and use it to follow the steps below. You will first download a file named dv111.exe from the Web and extract files from it. Then you will install DocView.

The file you download from the Web is a self-extracting executable file. Follow these steps:

  1. Create a temporary directory on your hard disk drive. Name it anything, such as C:\DOCTEMP.
  2. Download the file from the Web. Your Web browser will ask you how you want to handle the file. You should tell it that you want to store it as C:\DOCTEMP\DV111.EXE
  3. After the file is downloaded, run this new file. It is a self-extracting program that gets you all the files you need to install DocView.
  4. One of the extracted files is SETUP.EXE. Run this program and follow the instructions given by Setup.
  5. After DocView is installed, you may want to remove the temporary directory you created in step 1, and all the files in it.

Notes:

1. To install DocView, you must have Windows running on your computer. Also, you should have a TCP/IP Window Sockets package installed on your computer. That is the software that lets your computer talk to the Internet.

2. During Setup you will need to specify how you will receive documents through the Internet. With DocView you can receive documents either by Ariel FTP transmission or through MIME email. If your library delivers only by Ariel FTP transmission, then Setup will installs a DocView icon in the Startup Group or Folder. DocView needs to run as much as possible if documents are received through Ariel FTP transmission. By being in the Startup Group, DocView will run automatically and continuously. If you expect to use DocView as a TIFF viewer or to view documents received through MIME email, you will not need the Ariel FTP communications enabled. In this case, Setup will not install a DocView icon in the Startup Group. Regardless of how you answer the question, you may always reconfigure DocView after you run it.
