Part 6.  Learning to Use DocView

The survey’s sixth area had questions dealing with the ease of learning DocView, as well as the usefulness of the help facility, the built-in tutorial for new users, and the online User Manual.

6.1 DocView was easy to learn

  Percentage
Strongly agree 57
Tend to agree 32
Hard to decide 7
Tend to disagree 5
Strongly disagree 0

Analysis:

A total of 89 percent felt that DocView was easy to learn.

6.2 DocView’s help facility aided learning.

  Percentage
Strongly agree 37
Tend to agree 16
Hard to decide 25
Tend to disagree 3
Strongly disagree 1
I didn’t use it 18

Analysis:

Not many users actually used the help facility. The most likely reason was perhaps that help was not needed.

6.3 DocView messages were clear in their meaning

  Percentage
Strongly agree 42
Tend to agree 32
Hard to decide 11
Tend to disagree 7
Strongly disagree 0
I did not see any messages 9

Analysis:

It is rare that DocView presents an error message to the user. The software is designed to minimize error messages. The only message that consistently appears is to notify the user that an Ariel document has arrived (via FTP). Most users felt that messages of any kind were understandable.

6.4. DocView was about as easy to learn as most other Windows applications

  Percentage
Strongly agree 57
Tend to agree 28
Hard to decide 12
Tend to disagree 3
Strongly disagree 1

Analysis:

Most users (85 percent) felt that DocView was about as easy to learn as other Windows software.

6.5 The DocView Users Manual was useful

  Percentage
Strongly agree 26
Tend to agree 16
Hard to decide 15
Tend to disagree 1
Strongly disagree 1
I did not use it 41

Analysis:

Many users were unaware that there was a user manual. During the beta testing, each test site was permitted access to the online user manual and DocView software. While many libraries distributed the software to patrons, some never made copies of the user manual and distributed it. Their patrons had to learn how to use the software without a user manual.

6.6 The DocView on-line tutorial was useful

  Percentage
Strongly agree 21
Tend to agree 17
Hard to decide 14
Tend to disagree 0
Strongly disagree 0
I didn’t use it 47

Analysis:

The response to this question indicates either that nearly half of the testers did not have to use the built-in tutorial. Of those who used it, 76 percent felt that it was useful.

Comments on learning DocView (e.g., clear instructions, not complex):

1. DocView was easy to load and work with.2. Our patrons had no trouble learning how to use it.

3. I thought the instructions were concise. I only had trouble figuring out how to tell Windows 95 to recognize a tiff image. I had a little trouble when I downloaded DocView to my c drive. Overall DocView is easy to use.

4. The instructions for the store and forward server option are not clear. In what cases is it recommended to use a store and forward server and in what cases it isn't. Also the instructions to tell DocView what your IP address is, are fuzzy.

5. No real problems with getting started.

6. Not complex.

7. Participants in experiment had few problems with learning.

8. No instructions were necessary. Some buttons were confusing for example New document launched the Netscape browser. I expected to get the next tiff document. Side button are larger than necessary, which on reduced window size were then trun

9. Clear

10. Instructions never really did solve any problems I encountered.

11. Instructions were clear enough; I had some problems due to a software bug, which the developers fixed very quickly.

12. Instructions were clear and easy to follow

13. Manual was not available to me. Someone talked me through it.

14. DocView is not complex. Just need the Ariel software, and have been asking for it

15. I did not have a manual, nor was I aware of the tutorial. However, I was able to figure most things out. Instructions form menu items was clear. I am not yet sure about the save file options.

16. Error messages, particularly with respect to Ariel, were not helpful.

17 A little confusing at first, but easy to catch on.

18 No problems, we had it up and in use in just a very few minutes.

19 OK, but not as easy as most windows based programs20. The "next page" function was hard to find. After I found that the forward arrow meant next page, it made sense, but I had to randomly click on buttons to figure out what took me to the next page the first time I tried to go to the next page

21. I didn't have a problem learning the program.

22. Telephone aid to main library greatest asset in learning DocView.

23. Moderately easy to learn; Not difficult but, not always obvious

24 Good instructions

25. Haven't consulted the manual - do not have a print version yet.

26. I don't remember any documents for using DocView.

27. Not complex

28. It's really very easy to install and use it.

29. No problem

30. Not a bad program just slow. By the way, I know it helps on your end but, having to turn every other page 180 degrees to read it is a really inhibitory to reading from the monitor.

31. Good

32. Very easy to understand
